Heiho House

Heiho House

There are a number of great restaurants in Hawaii, but few that are truly unique to this market. As someone who has traveled to eat and will eat almost anything at least once to try it, I place a lot of value in restaurants that try to do things differently. Even if that means their attempts aren’t always 100% successful.

Based on the IG messages I got from my stories, I know that Heiho House is not for everyone. Some love it, some are confused by it, and others intimidated by it. I enjoy Heiho House as a place to try unique dishes, flavors, and ingredient combinations I am unlikely to find anywhere else in Hawaii… and in an ever-rotating menu that changes every six weeks or so.

So as I said on IG, Heiho House is definitely worth checking out. Go in with an open mind and be prepared to have some fun/adventure. Will you like every dish? Probably not. But will you experience something unique and have some delicious bites while you’re at it? Yes, you will.

Here is what we had during our visit on April 30, 2022:

Haiku - Wheatley, sticky rice foam, genmaicha, sakura

Abalone - Kumquat, coconut, habanero

Beef Tartare - Tomato, beets, annatto

Mushroom - Yuba, black garlic, mace

Shrimp Toast - Egg yolk, shallot

Okra - Dulse, chili leaves, bitter melon

Octopus - Tamarind, apple, pine needle

Eggplant - Ikura, leeks, rooibos

Sticky Rice - Star anise, chicken skin, mango

Blood Sausage - Fennel, cassava, malt vinegar

Lamb Belly - Peanuts, miso, shrimp paste

Bibingka - Chocolate, miso, stone fruit

Adobo - Green apple, black rice, pink peppercorn

Highlights for me were the octopus, okra, lamb belly, and the beef tartare. I also enjoyed the Adobo dessert, since I am a big fan of unique and weird desserts.
